College student Ebony Thomas has ADHD and Asperger’s Syndrome which was affecting her ability to focus in class. Taking comprehensive notes was impossible, because her attention would frequently shift from what her professor was saying. It was a stressful and ineffective process. Gaining access to Sonocent through El Camino Community College, California, Ebony discovered a new way to engage with her studies.
Hear from Ebony herself:
Staying in the moment with the Sonocent Link Companion App
When Ebony got the Sonocent companion app for her smartphone, she was able to stay in the moment in class. Now, she opens the app and taps record as soon as her professor starts speaking. As she records, she uses the simple controls to highlight audio whenever she hears something important or that she doesn’t understand. She loves being able to interact with the audio as she listens, and finds that focusing her attention on the screen helps her to ignore distractions, such as background chatter from other students. What’s more, she loves the peace of mind that comes with knowing that everything is being captured and she can listen back to those key moments of her recording whenever she chooses.
“When I got this app, I was like ‘wow’. Now I’m focusing on one thing, which is the screen. I’m not stressing about it. I’m not overthinking it. I’m doing what comes naturally, because I like it.”Ebony Thomas, Student, El Camino Community College
Sonocent has had a huge impact on Ebony’s studies and her belief in her ability to succeed. As her mother, Cherylann, says, “She’s more confident. She’s more open. It’s like a boost. She’s always been brilliant, so I knew the intellect was there… it brings tears to my eyes for her to be so confident – I love it”.
